Shading is a very important device as well. One differentiates between vertical and horizontal shadow devices.

On the example house just horizontal shading was applied in form of overhanging eaves and louver frames.

West South West Facade

Nevertheless, vertical shading should be applied definitely on the WSW façade and maybe according to preferences on the ENE façade as well in form of vertical gardens or just simply climbing plants such as vine, passion fruit and chuchu. As these plants are seasonal, they will only prevent solar radiation during the summer month, and allow theses facades to absorb some heat during winter in order to keep the house warm during the often cool nights.
