The total demand of electricity for Sitio Joaninha, based on a population of 900 inhabitants and the application of European standards, is approximately 720.000 kWh/a. Nevertheless, this demand can and should be reduced through various energy saving measures. The provision of sufficient daylight in the new buildings, the application of energy saving lighting equipment, the unplugging of stand-by appliances, the right positioning and size of cooling devices and a good natural ventilation have a significant impact on the consumption of electric energy. The teaching of energy saving methods and approaches will be part of the educational program of Sitio Joaninha, as energy saving depends a great deal on individual understanding and awareness. The periods of blackouts, which Brazil recently experienced, gave a clear sign for energy saving measures. A bonus scheme for energy savers, which also make energy wasters pay more for their electricity as already applied in various Brazilian cities, can become part of a community agreement and will also help raise energy consciousness. For the creation of domestic hot water (personal hygiene and washing-up) another 711.000 kWh/a are required. Electricity is produced, by gas driven combustion engine, which are fed on landfill gas. The creation of hot water, is realised through self-made solar thermal collectors only. Harvested landfill gas should only be used for cooking, after it is cleaned from hydrogen sulphide and halogen.
