The village square

The village square will become the central space in Sitio Joaninha.

Here we have a small medical centre, the crèche with the primary school, the bakery, the butcher, the local administration with the environment guards office and a big open space for the weekly fair and the village festivities.

The school has fife classrooms and a service house with bathrooms, library and teachers room. A roof, which creates the western entrance to the village square, connects the school with the medical centre. On the opposite side, the square is embraced by shops and administration spaces.

All buildings create an u-shape square, that is completely open towards the village and the south. Trees along the northern side of the square and on the square itself prevent continuous solar radiation.

Coming by bus, one arrives already in the heart of the village. Traffic is slowed down here by zebra crossings. For people working in the workshops, the square becomes a daily meeting point, because here all footpath meet, and the bakery and butcher are located here as well. The northern entrance is created by a mango orchard, which invites trespassers to rest on the benches beneath them. From here one enjoys the views into the newly created biotopes along the creek.
